Matthias Saul

Post by Matthias Saul on Thu Jan 22, 2015 3:05 pm

Appearance

Matthias is a pale, Caucasian man six feet, two inches in height with a lean frame weighing in at 185 pounds.  Having experienced the rigorous training program of the True Cross, Matthias’ body is in very good shape, possessing a practical strength and almost feline grace despite lacking the bulging muscles of a body builder or the cut physique of a gymnast.  Instead, his body houses a springy power and quickness deceptively hidden by an otherwise average exterior.  Due in part to his limited time in the field, he has no scars save for some faint marks on his rear gums left by the removal of his wisdom teeth (he had 6).

His hair is cut short with an accented tuff of a bang brushed forward to obscure a slightly receding hairline.  Though it was light brown during his childhood, his hair has become prematurely grey along with his thin eyebrows and his small, tapering goatee.  His face has a narrow, hawkish quality to it; all hard, sloping lines coming to noticeable points further accented by his choice in facial hair.  His eyes, green in color (specifically the color of faded dollar bills), generally appear a bit sunken with dark lines beneath them which is rather odd considering his relatively healthy sleep schedule.

Matthias wears a highly customized variation on clerical robes, having removed the sleeves and cut a long slit up the left hand side of his hooded robes while adding a full white mantle with a repeating pattern of black crosses along the lower edge.  Beneath the robe, he generally wears an olive green clerical tunic along with black trousers and matching black boots.  A curious addition is a pair of long, black arm warmers which Matthias supposedly wears to combat the chill associated with poor circulation of blood to his hands.  They are covered in numerous metallic studs (magnets to assist in circulation) and leave his thumb and fingers bare.

Equipment

- Sword:  Though he has no incentive to combat himself considering his new position within the True Cross, Matthias prefers the subtle comfort of being armed should all other options become exhausted.  His personal weapon is a straight edged, sword of Korean heritage.  The handle is polished hardwood with a crimson finish and gold accents on both the pommel and the minimal hand guard.  The blade is blessed high carbon steel (AISI 5160, differentially hardened) and measures 40” overall.

- Satellite Phone:  To ensure that he can always stay in contact with his organization, Matthias carries the military grade, Iridium Extreme 9575 Satellite Phone (in matte black).

- Entourage: Though not “equipment” in the traditional sense, Matthias has a dedicated pair of bodyguards on standby for times when he must leave the relative safety of the Vatican.  As the True Cross are predominantly exorcists and counters to the supernatural rather than professional bodyguards (and Matthias would rather have them focus on other matters even if they were), his escorts are pulled from the Pontifical Swiss Guard.  Clad in dark blue regular duty uniforms and armed with a single Steyr Tactical Machine Pistol and SIG P220 (blessed lead rounds) per person, the duo have all the training and skill that would be expected of veteran guardsmen but their physical capabilities are within normal human ranges.

- Mints:  Matthias never goes anywhere without a small container of breath mints.  He has developed a habit of offering them to people who annoy him in some way.

- Collection:  Contained within his apartment in the Vatican is a very impressive collection of vintage wine.

Personality

Put bluntly, Matthias Saul is a complete and utter sociopath.  He lacks any sense of empathy for his fellow man and quite honestly has difficulty in comprehending the value of human lives.  Upon hearing this, one may reasonably wonder why it is he came to be a clergyman, much less the head of the True Cross itself.  While it is true that Matthias is unable to connect with his fellow man, he does have an ironclad belief in the power and grace of God.  Because of that, even though he may not understand the inherent value of mankind, the fact that the Lord values them is enough for him.  If anything, he considers himself more of a custodian than a shepherd to mankind.  To be perfectly honest, he welcomes the idea of the Apocalypse and the chance to ascend to his Lord in heaven and actively hopes that it occurs within his lifetime.  Until then, he considers it his responsibility to ensure the continued survival of humanity in an admittedly detached and professional manner.

Despite his issues with empathy, Matthias still manages to be a truly effective leader due to his ability to objectively assess the abilities and personalities of those around him.  Even if he cannot comprehend the value of their lives, he can still make use of their individual talents and subtly manipulate them to his own ends through in depth character analysis and predictive psychology.  He believes it is this very skill that earned him his recent promotion to the head of the True Cross as he was able to examine the needs of the organization from an objective outside perspective due to not having been raised in the immediate Vatican environment like others in the organization.

Beyond analyzing individuals, his detached nature makes Matthias specially inclined to judge broader social developments down to smaller scale strategies.  In regards to nonbelievers, his sociopathic mindset is oddly in line with the general purpose of the True Cross.  Because he does not connect with his fellow man (Catholic or otherwise) he holds no ill will towards those of any faith and is happy to leave them to their own devices while focusing on supernatural threats of all shapes and sizes.  In fact, Matthias is generally considered to be quite liberal by his fellow clergy.  For example, he has never condemned the idea of homosexuality and has little issue with them seeking the sacrament of marriage (a viewpoint which may have earned him points with the current Pope).

Even while perfecting the art of seeing into the minds of others, Matthias takes great pains to ensure that others cannot look in at him.  His face is almost always a mask of neutrality hiding his true thoughts and opinions of those around him.  His speaking style is mechanical and proper, favoring short statements to the point of being curt (though his voice does have a rich, relaxing timber to it).

Perhaps because of his closed off nature, Matthias enjoys more individualized activities such as whittling, reading (he is an insatiable student), and collecting (namely wine and new recipes).  The exception to this trend is the sport of volleyball which he has enjoyed since his youth.  Playing the position of setter, he serves as a control tower for his team, conducting strategies to most effectively use the individual skills of his teammates.

Abilities

- Master Swordsman:  Initially taken up as a novelty more than anything else, Matthias developed an instant fondness for swordplay early in life and continued to train in competitive fencing throughout his scholastic career (eventually achieving a level of skill of some renown).  Upon being assigned to the True Cross, a training program was devised for him to take best use of those preexisting skills, gradually honing his impressive natural talent to near supernatural levels.  Because he did not serve as a full time field agent or Exorcist, Matthias generally avoided most of the combat training that his peers underwent, focusing that training time solely on the sword.  As a result of this, Matthias is a rather inflexible combatant, lacking the wider pool of skills that his brethren draw upon.  However, this singular focus also left him supremely skilled in his single area of interest, easily capable of dominating multiple instructor level opponents in armed, close quarters combat.

Saul’s specific style of swordsmanship descends from the works of Alfred Hutton, a renowned master swordsman responsible for the first English revival of historical fencing.  As such, Matthias prides himself on absolute precision as well as exemplary timing and spatial control in combat which flow into a personal preference for counter strikes and ripostes.  His experience has left him with a talent for anticipating the closing patterns of his opponents based on rhythm which he takes advantage of through small, precise thrusts at necessary points such as the wrist, shoulder, and knee.

- Physical Training:  While Matthias’ speed and reaction time are honed to peak human levels, his strength and durability are within the norm for an athletic man his age.

- Ever-expanding Education:  Though his initial studies focused on rhetoric and political philosophy, Matthias is a man with a deep love and hunger for education.  Following his initial graduation, he continued his education into sociology and foreign language (He currently speaks English and Italian fluently with passable Arabic and French (he would like to learn Spanish next)).  As would be expected of a high ranking member of the Catholic Church, Matthias is well versed in Christian history and theology (as well as its critics).

- Manipulation:  Due to his quiet nature, Matthias is exceptionally skilled at listening and reading the emotions of others.  Analyzing them from an objective perspective, Saul is able to quickly deduce their general personality trends and gently prod them down behavioral paths more favorable to him.  Used more maliciously, he is no stranger to the occasional “Hannibal Lector” speech but he utilizes them with a ruling caveat.  Specifically, he is not arrogant enough to believe that one can ever truly point out something about another that the listener is utterly unaware of after only a short meeting.  Instead, it is far more effective to redefine preexisting character traits which the listener is comfortable with until they are glaring character flaws and logical inconsistencies.

- Masks:  Created as a means to hide his own mental instabilities, Matthias has perfected the art of masking his thoughts and emotions from others.  Body language, facial twitches, speaking style, and tone are all strictly policed to ensure that it is virtually impossible for others to determine what he is thinking.  Because of this, Matthias is infuriatingly hard to predict.
- Team Coordination:  Though an extremely cold and distant man, Matthias’ skills at prediction and manipulation also allow him to take full advantage of those he is in charge of, making use of their particular skillsets in the most effective way possible.

- Lucid Dreaming/Recall:  Matthias has the distinction of being a lucid dreamer which is to say that he has full control over his own dreams.  When paired with his naturally impressive memory, Matthias is able to utilize perfect recall of everything he has ever read or seen while dreaming.  Strangely, the one aspect of his dreams that he cannot alter is the presence of a field of white flowers.

- Volleyball:  Surprisingly, Matthias rather enjoys the sport of volleyball.  Not only did he play the sport while in school, he has gone so far as to set up something of a “company league” consisting of teams comprised of various residents of Vatican City.  His favored position is “setter” back up with a powerful jumping serve.  His team has yet to lose.

- “Weight of the Word”:  Due to his focus on swordsmanship and his academic studies, Matthias does not have the same level of skill in exorcism or the wide assortment of faeth techniques demonstrated by other high ranking members of the True Cross.  The only technique available to him is known as the “Weight of the Word” in which he imparts the weight of his own faith in God onto an object or opponent.  By making contact (with his body or channeled through his sword) with an object or opponent while the technique is consciously in use, Matthias can doubly its weight.  Though this is not substantial on its own, the effect is compounded with each consecutive instance of contact, quickly rendering opponents unable to raise their weapons or do more than kneel before the power of God.  The technique is one unique solely to Matthias due to his rather unique interpretation of faith in the Lord.  Whereas other faeth users draw power from the raw belief that they are doing what is right in the Name of the Lord, Saul's technique hinges on the understanding that the will of the Lord must be carried out in order for the world to make logical sense.  Because of this, he cannot freely manipulate faeth in the wide number of techniques others can, instead relying upon it as a hammer of sorts.

Alternatively, the “Weight of the Word” can be utilized at a limited range of 15 yards.  When used in this manner, the symbol of the Biblical Matthias (the replacement of Judas Iscariot) appears on the ground (3 yards in diameter).  A moment later, the space within the symbol is immediately subjected to a sudden increase in gravity (3 times Earth’s norm if used against supernatural creatures, 2 times the norm if used against humans).  The gravity well can be maintain for 3 posts with a limit or one well at a time.

Biography

Though something of an oddity in the True Cross, Matthias Saul is not an orphan.  In fact, both of his parents are still alive and well in northern Italy living a peaceful life in semi-retirement (His father teaches a single class at a local university and his mother sells handmade quilts and blankets on the internet).  Additionally, he was never subject to abuse or other dramatic, life-altering adventures with the paranormal during his developmental years.  That being said, Matthias still cannot quite be described as “normal”.  Born in France to a French father and Italian mother, Saul’s family moved to Italy while he was still an infant.  Though both of his parents were educators, they came from relatively old money which allowed them to live in comfort as far back as he could remember.  Each of them was multilingual, speaking English, Italian, and French but for the most part they defaulted to Italian and English in day to day life.  Matthias would not develop an interest in picking up his father’s language as well until he was about 12 years old and even then it was more of a side project than any devoted goal to master the language.

Matthias attended private school, received excellent grades, interacted well enough with other children his age, and never really caused his family much trouble.  He was, by all outward appearances, a normal child (le gasp!).  However, Saul’s eccentricities were entirely internal for despite his best efforts, he was never able to truly connect on an emotional level with other people.  While he could recognize that there were benefits to having relationships with others, he could never grasp the actual value of human lives or the rationale behind moral consciousness.  The news of his disorder came as a great shock to his parents who reacted with rational prudence by encouraging their son to see a therapist about his feelings.  Matthias submitted without complaint and as far as the expert could determine, he was harmless.  Though he might not have understood the value of human life, Matthias lacked any desire to take harm his fellow man.

The far more troubling issue was the existential questions he began to develop as he reached puberty.  Having spent his life unable to comprehend the rationale behind society’s moral consciousness, he began to search for a logical source for the definitions of “good” and “evil”.  Concluding that such a declaration was too sweeping to merely be the construction of regular people, he was eventually drawn to the concept of God and a divine plan.  The idea of faith in an idea beyond his understanding struck a cord with Matthias.  Just because he could not understand morality did not mean that it was wrong.  Just because he could not fully understand God did not mean there was not worth in following His teachings.

Delving deeper into religion while he attended university, he finally came to the conclusion that he wished to become a priest upon finishing his education (which he was able to do in two years taking a sizeable course load and bringing in additional credits beforehand).  By choosing to enter the seminary after university, he was able to cut down his time there to four years spent deepening his understanding of religion, philosophy emerge a deacon and finally, as a fully-fledged member of the clergy at the age of 25.

Adding another point differentiating himself from much of the True Cross as it is today is the fact that Matthias was not “drafted” so to speak through one of the Church’s orphanages or a freak encounter with a monstrous beast.  Instead, he was simply assigned there after becoming a fully ordained priest, drawing upon his impressive education career to serve as an ambassador for the organization on foreign affairs.  While skeptical at first, it was not long before Matthias was given indisputable proof of the supernatural and happily threw himself into his new assignment.

With his scholastic training essentially completed, the most difficult aspect of Matthias’ new assignment was by far the physical training regimen that he was forced to undergo to ensure his own safety in times of crisis.  Though he’d considered himself a talented enough athlete through most of his life (having played volleyball and training in competitive fencing for years), nothing could have properly prepared him for the rigorous trials which transformed the agents of the True Cross into living weapons.  It was long, laborious work but through grit and stubborn determination, Matthias was eventually able to hone his own preexisting talents to the level worthy of the True Cross while steadily increasing in skill as envoy and mouthpiece of the organization to the world at large.  During his years of service as the envoy of the True Cross, Matthias was able to maintain the positive working relationship that the organization had enjoyed with America's VWAT as well as somewhat improve the True Cross' standing within the Middle East.  By and large, he was not a field operative but from time to time he was called into larger group operations including at least two vampire exterminations and a lycan hunt (one of the former occurring in response to a failed assassination attempt during one of his meetings with VWAT).

Recently though, several developments in the Church have once again shifted Matthias’ purpose in life.  Following Father Antony Diem’s decision to step down from the leadership position of the True Cross, the Papacy saw fit to nominate Saul as the newest head of the organization.  Having been raised apart from much of the organization, it was believed that Matthias’ significant foreign experience will offer a new and refreshing perspective in how the True Cross can be used most effectively in a rapidly changing era.

Feels good to see some me in characters. Feels like freedom.

Rank is a thing, so I'm assuming this has been discussed beforehand. Unless someone says no, I'll work under the assumption we're good on this front.

Swords for decoration are fun. Cut someone like in Deadman Wonderland.

How many of these guys are following him at a time, and if you're using them in combat, I'll need some general description of what they're packing and what they do, too. Rest is your deal, though.

I demand a complete list of all wine he owns, especially the dates.

If I cared, at least. Drink your grape juice with reckless abandon.

Kind of dipping into asexual stereotypes, but from what I'm getting on the purpose of this character, that doesn't seem like the intention, so I can give it a pass.

I sense a beach party on the horizon.

No problems in content, but I would like to see more of what he was doing after finishing training, unless we're meant to assume Almos and stuff happened, like, a week later.

Couple things, but this'll be good to go once they're fixed.

Edits were made with the exception of the biography as I do not quite understand your confusion. He spent several years serving as the envoy of the True Cross until Father Diem stepped down in the wake of the Almos incident.
